When our contemporary society encounters the new technology era, we should consider a new transportation design of subway cars in order to improve the quality of life in metropolitan areas. These days, most people experience transportation congestion during rush hour because subway cars in the United States have yet to be spatially optimized. The problem of public transportation should be solved as soon as possible because it is directly connected to enhance the benefit of the public. Then, how can we solve the problem with a reasonable solution?
Most countries tend to design bendable subways, otherwise known as open gangways, to increase the capacity of passengers during rush hour, and promote public safety in subways. Open gangways is a new design method which allows passengers to walk between each compartment without opening the doors. Subways can have more open space to accommodate passengers through removing passageways among subway cars, creating one continuous car. Passengers can also redistribute themselves while the subway is moving. Furthermore, a well-designed open gangways subway is very flexible to a curved track, and thus it is able to ensure public safety.
Even though most countries tend to change their subways’ designs, the MTA gives a skeptical response on changing its subway design because the MTA does not feel an open gangways subways are necessary. However, the MTA should consider how open gangways can benefit the public and the surrounding urban environment.
Designing new subways with open gangways is a very creative idea because it is an efficient way of solving transportation congestion in metropolitan areas. Public transportation is very important in developing metropolitan areas because it helps people conserve natural environment. In the book “Contemporary Urban Planning” by John M, LEVY, he says, “Improving transit tends to decongest the streets by reducing automobile travel. It appeals to environmentalists for reasons for air quality and fuel consumption (251).” Improving public transportation highly contributes to making a better environment, such as having fresh air. For instance, if open gangways can operate in the business district in lower Manhattan, most businessmen may prefer to use public transportation because they do not have to worry about transportation congestion. Then, society can prevent air pollution from using automobile. Moreover, improving public transportation may attract more people in metropolitan areas so that cities can look forward to developing their economies. Consequently, designing a subway with open gangways is in effect like kills two birds with one stone.
