It is important to note that development can affect the environment around us. Nowadays we are faced with problems like global warming, pollution, and other dangers to our planet. We only have one planet, and it is important that we protect it as much possible. If we don’t, then in a few years it will be hazardous for human life. There were a number of environmental protection polices and acts that were passed in the US. The Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1970 for this purpose. A lot of this regulations must be done at a national level. This is the case because environmental problems cover a vast area, and pollution can travel throughout the environment.

I would like to speak of at least one example in New Jersey. New Jersey suffered the superstorm Sandy back in 2012, but there are still repercussions that are felt today. More than 12 miles, of beach area, was completely devastated by the storm. I had previously heard that multiple sand dunes were built to prevent this from happening in the future. To have an idea of the dimensions, they can reach roughly to 20 feet in height, and about 400 feet in width. Depending on the area though, some people have complained as it has affected their way of living. Now some of them cannot see the beach, and others can’t walk down the same paths as before. This has been a problem, and in a sense could lower the value of their homes. On the other hand, many of these homes are actually facing eminent domain.

Considering the fact that the land suffered a lot, values are going down, and it all has to be restored, it is probably best to move elsewhere. A project of $128 million has been passed to build up the lost beachfronts. The goal is not only to build them up again, but to possibly make them even bigger than they were before Superstorm Sandy. By April 2016, this project is predicted to be complete. I would imagine that after all this is done, then maybe new houses will be built. This is turn would give the houses more value then the probably have now. A lot of money is being invested into this, but in the long run, it may give back much more in return. The idea of an even bigger beachfront that is safe and secure, will probably call the attention of many people. It may come to the point that many will want to be a part of this.
